If Only One Could Come Back to This Quiet Place

Friday, February 10, 2012

I went to Longwood on Wednesday.

My brother Sean is still there, and it's only an hour away from Charlottesville, so when I have the afternoon free, I like to go spend the day there. This time I got to catch up with one of my favorite professors and meet with my thesis advisor who, luckily enough for me, teaches at both Longwood and Hollins. And of course, I got to spend some time with Sean.

I learned two things on Wednesday.
From my advisor: I'm a lot further along with my thesis than I thought I was.
From my old professor: I don't have to know what I'm doing with my life just because I'm in grad school.

You just have to keep doing what you're doing and let what's supposed to happen, happen.

So I got some tea and sat down to read.

  1. This is so comforting! I'm probably going to end up in grad school when I graduate in two years and just the thought scares me sometimes!

  3. Don't worry about where you're going because you'll find what you want to do eventually! The high school I teach at is contemplating creating a children's lit course for the fall semester. It's surprising how flexible an English degree is, and I'm sure can work children's literature into many careers.

  5. I LOVE your professor for saying that! I am about to graduate in five weeks with my BA in English and have absolutely no idea what I want to do!

  6. I have the hardest time with that - not knowing what I'm doing. I feel like we all feel like we have to have life planned out. That's so fantastic that your professor gave you that kind of reassurance. Life has a plan for all of us, and it's different than out own.

  8. I LOVE that advice. Sometimes it seems as if everything has to be figured out, but that's not true. Life is never easy to figure or plan everything out, so I don't know why society expects us to have every step of the way alrady planned to the minute. ;) I wish people told me things like that more often :)

  9. That building is so pretty! And I love that advice, I'm not far along in my college career and I'm still feeling overwhelmed that I don't know 100% for sure what I want to do with my life!

  10. Seriously, most of us don't know what we're doing when we "grow up". Including my parents and their friends! I think we just have fun along the way. Plus, grad school Is what you're doing right now! That should get you some pass time!
