What My Twenties Are Teaching Me

Monday, May 7, 2012

I came across this beautiful series last week, and I was so smitten with the theme that I had to throw my two cents in.
I'm approaching my twenty-fourth birthday this September, and these past few years have taught me a thing or two.

[In the old apartment with old hair, reading Old Friend from Far Away, taken March 2011.]

Learn to let go. There are only so many things that you can control. Do what you can with those and just let go of the rest. Life is too short to be stressed out about things that you just can't do anything about.

+ You are too old to allow anyone to make you feel badly about yourself. Don't waste any more time on someone who consistently makes you feel like crap. Just move on. You're a grown-up! You deserve good people in your life.

You are too young to settle. Mediocre friends, a job you hate; anything that breeds negativity. Get rid of it.

Don't you dare feel bad about feeling good about yourself.

You are capable of feeling grief that you never thought was possible. Someone will probably dump you. People will die. Life will change, and you will freak out about it. You won't know how to deal with it, and then one day, you will.

+ Figure out what works for you and do it. The way you work, the way you eat, the way you deal with stress--just find out how you manage life the best and do it that way. Don't worry if it's not the way other people do it.

+ Just be nice. Stop judging. People are going to blow your mind sometimes, but you have no idea why they do what they do. Even if you're pretty sure, just stop and focus on bettering yourself instead. Pointing out someone's flaws doesn't make you any less flawed.

+ Someone else's success doesn't make you a failure. Get over it.

+ You truly get what you give. Work hard, laugh hard, love a lot, have fun, and really take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way.

+ Forgive, and then forget, dammit! Let go of the grudges. Move on with your life.

+ There is truly no limit to what the power of thinking positively can do for you. Visualize what you want from your life and focus on that every day. Inspire yourself with your thoughts and good things will follow.

+ Just love yourself, unconditionally. No explanation needed.

  1. This is absolutely beautiful.
I struggle with holding grudges sometimes, but as I get older, I'm realizing that that's not going to breed anything good.
I'm also working on positive thinking. I unfortunately tend to think negatively about a lot of things, but I've been really trying to participate in more things that make me feel good and less that make me feel bad and breed negativity.

  2. Very good advice. I'm 27 now and miles away from where I was at 24. Every day I know myself a little better and like myself a little better, so enjoy getting older!

  3. Great advice. I just turned 24 last week, and I seem to have had a sudden realisation or enlightenment over things. Many of which you named above. I thought I was just being weird, but perhaps it's normal around my age. :>

  4. What a great post! I couldn't agree more about loving yourself unconditionally - I'm only 19...we'll see what my twenties teach me later on!

  5. Great advice, I'm turning 22 later this month which probably puts me at the useless end of the 20s spectrum, but I've definitely experienced a lot of the above over the past few years.

  7. I totally agree with everything here. I'm approaching 25 and have been thinking a lot of the same things - now if only I knew them at 21! :)

  8. I am only 22, but so much has happened to me in the past 2 years than ever before. I have grown up so emotionally so much in the short amount of time since turning 20. I am both excited and nervous to see where the rest if twenties brings me.

  9. Amazing post. I'm turing 26 in December. (wow that was hard to even type I'm not kidding) I feel so much further than I did even a year ago, let alone 5 years ago. It's cliche but I want to be the best I can be and doing things like keeping my life in check will get me there. Well done!

  10. I'm 26 and I don't think I've come to terms with being this age and all the things I am meant to have learned by now :/

  11. Great list! I love the point about figuring out what works for you and just going with it - I'm 27 now and stil learning that (and what works changes from time to time, theres that, too!)

  12. Lovely life lessons. I can't believe I'll be 22 this year and while I think these are things we can and have learned at many stages in life, they get redefined with where you are in life personally. I'm sure this list will be a great reminder for me to not stress and just embrace myself in the upcoming months!

  15. Megan, 20-year old me needed this advice too. Especially "People are going to blow your mind sometimes, but you have no idea why they do what they do."

I want to learn to let that go of judgement and just say "hmmm... well, you be you."
