Pin Curls: A Tutorial

Wednesday, August 29, 2012

I can curl my hair in about three minutes flat. It's become an almost-daily task in the morning, and I'm really fast. But, if I'm going out and have a little more time to get ready, I like to curl slowly and pin everything up while I get ready. I find that pin curls are bouncier and hold a lot better than a simple, hasty turn of the curling iron. Here's how to get the look!

1. Separate hair into sections and curl the first one under. Roll curling iron up as far as possible.
2. When the hair is hot to the touch, release it and carefully (it'll be quite warm!) roll the curl up with your fingers.
3. Pin the curl against your head. I think you could use bobby pins, but my hair is super thick and heavy, so I use those metal hair pins pictured above.
4. Repeat steps 1-4 all the way around your head!
5. Once everything is pinned up, give the whole thing a spritz (I use Redken Wool Shake).
6. Hang out around your house feeling glamorous until it's time to leave! (If I weren't taking photos for the world to see, I'd usually wait until this moment to do my makeup and put some clothes on.)
7. Take out the pins, shake your head around, and give the ends one final spray. Go forth and be fancy!

  2. Definitely going to have to give this a try. It takes me about 7 min. to give my hair a little curl at the ends, but I would take the extra time if it meant that much more volume! Super cute!

  3. This is just stunning! I'm in the process of waiting for my hair to grown out so that I can do fabulous 'do's just like this one!

  5. you took these at Rob's temporary place, didn't you?!!? How much does Rob love taking pictures of these kinds of things, because I know Kyle just loveeeeeeeeees it!!

also, I don't do pin curls much, mostly because I've always left them in much longer than you suggest, resulting in a tight, Shirley Temple, crazy lady curl. But i should try it for just a few minutes like you suggest and see what happens!

    CupcakesOMG!

  7. So cute! I do a more ghetto version of this sometimes with bobbi pins and it never looks quite right, I'll need to get some real pins. You look gorgeous.

  8. I'm going to try this as a way to (attempt to) keep away humidity hair! Do you begin with hair that's just been blown out? I'm so jealous of your thick, shiny hair ... mines thick too but of the corse/kinky variety.

    1. I start with REALLY dirty hair. So it was blown out, like, four days ago. The curls stay much better! When it's clean, they just kind of slip out. God luck! I think curling is the best way to stay in control of the humidity!

  9. I think I have way too much hair to do pin curls- it ends up taking too long. Yours look really cute though!

  10. My immediate thought when I saw the first pic was, "oh, she looks adorkable!" Hahahaha! Nice after pic, you clean up well! I curl my hair after I blow dry, and then I can just sleep on it until the next time I wash, which is usually four days later. Actually, I try to keep to a schedule, Thursday nights and Monday nights. Sometimes I go seven days if there isn't anything important on my calendar, but that's just really laziness on my part.

    1. Hahaha Gayla! I love the term "adorkable." I can go seven days, too! After I curl it like this I twist it in a bun for bedtime and it keeps them pretty well.

  16. Very helpful. But as a person with naturally curly hair, mostly, I just wonder how you get your bangs so straight!
