I am so excited that I'm in the home stretch with finals work, and in a matter of days I'll finally have time to start "reading for pleasure" again. I actually just read Atonement for class, and quite enjoyed it. Finishing my reread of Deathly Hallows is on my list, plus some Lord of the Rings, book 5 of Game of Thrones, and whatever else I can power through on my bookshelf in the next few weeks!
Also, The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle is one of my favorites -- you'll have to let me know what you think!
I just reread Jane Eyre for the third time. For some reason I can't get enough of that book. But I also just finished Carlos Ruiz Zafon's The Shadow of the Wind which was haunting and enchanting and really beautiful. I recommend them both highly!
I'm rereading The Paris Wife right now too! Not to sounds like a complete book nerd, BUT I was invited to talk about it at my Mom's next book club meeting haha. -Jess
Hmmm...I used to read two or three books a week when I was younger and had less daily responsibilities. Now I'm fortunate to find the time to read that many in a year. I barely have time to thumb through a magazine these days. That said, earlier this year my husband and I read "The Great Gatsby" together. And I read "The Magnesium Miracle" which has added value to my daily life. I just received my paperback copy of "The Paris Wife" which I intend to make the time to enjoy after the first of the year, curled up in my new zebra print slipper chair in my cozy bedroom. That one is thanks to you, but don't feel pressured to know if I enjoy it...but we can have a little bookclub chat over cocktails in June! Just don't quiz me!
I just finished reading The Hobbit and excited to see the movie! Will be starting a new book after finals. Haven't really decided which one I'll read. So many to choose from and I also added more books to my christmas list.
I had to get my cheesy Christmas fix....I just finished Karen Kingsbury's "The Bridge" and Debbie Macombers "When Christmas Comes". Now I'm onto a Mary Higgins Clark book, "You Belong to Me". I've also got a place marked in Fitzgerald's "Tender is the Night", but I haven't picked it up in a while.
I just finished the $100 Startup by Chris Guillibeau, and am working on The Power of Habit by Charles Duhigg. Platform by Michael Hyatt is in the queue, and I may start it before I finish Habit.
For fun reading, I'm on the latest two books in the Game of Thrones series: A Feast for Crows and A Dance with Dragons. Both books take place over the same period of time, so since I'm actually re-reading them, I'm following a guide that has me alternating between books so that I read roughly concurrent chapters in order. It's been fun connecting the dots and experiencing the larger story this way. It's interesting having events that are a thousand pages apart in traditional-book-reading order more closely connected.
Oh I loved The Paris Wife! I am sort of obsessed with Hemingway now. He's such a love/hate true life character and I really like that about him. Here's what I'm reading now: Blue Like Jazz (almost finished!), Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest, At Work: Annie Leibowitz, A Moveable Feast by Hemingway (see, obsessed), and rereading The Happiness Project.
I need some more Fiction suggestions so I'm glad to read what everyone else is into right now :)
I'm also a little obsessed with Hemingway. I love him though. Blue Like Jazz was good! I have trouble with the "Girl Who" series--they're too brutal for me sometimes!
I'm not reading anything right now, which is so weird for me! I'm normally reading several books at a time. I need to make a list and just head out and buy some!
My thoughts exactly on The Girl series. Last night while reading it I kept thinking "why on earth am I reading this?! I can't even hear the Law & Order SVU intro music without getting creeped out. I will have nightmares for sure!". But now that I've started it I feel like I have to finish.
I also, because of the subject matter, feel like I should take a self defense class...or buy a gun (note: probably won't buy a gun).
I just finished Bel Canto, an ages-ago recommendation from my aunt...I'm definitely going to be following up on her recs more swiftly now, because it was one of the best things I've read. Characters who become full human beings, and a whipsaw plot that all takes place in a few rooms of one house (it's like the book version of Twelve Angry Men, minus the jury part, I guess).
I'm halway through "Please Look After Mom" now, and loving it so far. One hundred percent obsessed with book recommendation posts, so thank you!
Atonement is fantastic. I love Ian McEwan. I read his first collection of short stories (First Love, Last Rites) a few months back - dark stuff.
ReplyDeleteCurrently working my way through Eleven Kinds of Loneliness by Richard Yates.
Happy Monday!

ReplyDeleteIt was so good! You need to read it!
DeleteWhat a great list! I think I should prob reread Les Mis before the movie. Right now I'm rereading the Great Gatsby!

ReplyDeleteJust over halfway through The Ages of Miracles. It's pretty good, although I still feel like I'm waiting for something really big to happen.
ReplyDeleteI'll add it to my list!
DeleteI just finished "Faith" by Jennifer Haigh.
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed her book "Mrs. Kimble"- SO good!
Faith however, was a little different. Interesting & still a page turner. Check out both books!
Love,
Manda @ Eat Cake
I will! Thanks for the recommendations!

ReplyDeleteOh I need to reread Jane Eyre! It's been too long.
DeleteI just read "The Sentimentalists." Really a great read. Its starts a little slow but I'm so glad I stayed with it.
ReplyDeleteI've never read it!
DeleteI'm convinced that everything Murakami writes is gold. Have you read any of his others?
ReplyDeleteI recently read At Large and At Small by Anne Fadiman, and it's the last book that I truly loved. Such wonderfully crafted essays.
Loved your post on The Equals Record! I'm currently reading Oliver Twist. I like to read a Dickens book at Christmas time :)
ReplyDeleteI'm rereading The Paris Wife right now too! Not to sounds like a complete book nerd, BUT I was invited to talk about it at my Mom's next book club meeting haha.

ReplyDeleteI want to reread that! The movie looks so awesome!

I haven't read the Game of Thrones series but I love the HBO show! I'll have to give them a try soon.
DeleteThey're dense. It'll probably help that you've watched the show; it'll be easier to keep the huge number of characters straight.
DeleteI'm finally reading Ender's Game. I feel like I should have read it years ago!
ReplyDeleteYes! Ender's Game is fabulous. That's one of Rob's favorites!
DeleteKafka on the shore by Haruki Murakami, then something from Ray Bradbury and Fernando Savater :)
ReplyDeleteKeeping busy!

Bel Canto sounds wonderful! I need to give it a read!Glad you enjoyed the post
ReplyDeleteI don't read nearly as often as I used to. I'm not sure why, but there just doesn't seem to be time even though I know that's no excuse!
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I'm not the only person who makes reading lists. Just finished mine for 2012 today...
ReplyDeleteI love a good reading list!
