[Really into bed-time snacks these days.]

Watching old episodes of Mad Men--my parents have gotten really into it, and even though Rob and I have watched almost all of it, it's really cool to go back and watch Don Draper's character progress. I can't get over how amazingly written and put-together that show is--re-watching it is like re-reading a really good book.

Thinking about the distance between me and Rob, a lot. Yesterday I actually looked at a map and it kind of blew my mind. There's like half of the country between us! I obviously know where Virginia and Minnesota are, but until yesterday I hadn't really looked at it with the perspective that I have now. It's crazy.

Listening to Codes and Keys by Death Cab for Cutie. I think it's one of my favorite albums. (I listen to Monday Morning practically on repeat and who knows, maybe I like to think that Ben Gibbard wrote it about me.) It reminds me of the summer of 2011 (which feels a lot further away than it is), my last semester of graduate school, and moving to Charlottesville. It's funny, because that was one of the hardest seasons of my life so far, and yet I look back on it today with a smile.

Excited about my first visit to Minneapolis! I'll be there very late on Valentine's Day and am staying until Sunday. I actually tried to switch my flights around last night because we realized a little too late that Rob actually has that next Monday off, but it was like $350 to change my reservation. Ridiculous. But anyway, it will still be so nice to spend a weekend together and get to know his new neighborhood!

Reading the last essay in On Booze by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I read this little tidbit from The New York Times in the back of the book and I think it's perfect: "More than any other writer of those times, Fitzgerald had a sense of living in history."

Loving the time I have to spend with my sweet dog. I haven't written about it yet, but Rocky is having quite a few health problems. He's about thirteen years old and I know that like us, dogs don't live forever, but I'm having a hard time with it. I'm trying really hard to take advantage of the time we have by going on walks together and giving him extra kisses and belly scratches.

Looking forward to the weekend! I have no real plans but a big to-do list that includes, but is not limited to taking some photos, writing an article for a magazine, and putting together a Valentine's-themed recipe for next week. Here's to productivity!

What about you? If you write a Currently post, let me know and leave a link in the comments! As always, many thanks to my beautiful blog-friend Dani for inspiring these posts.

  1. You're from Charlottesville? Me too... sort of. Spent the sordid teen years there, anyway, grew up way more rurally. :) My whole family is on there and in NY, I'm in Chicago, so I feel you on the distance thing... something like 700 miles, it's crazy when you're missing someone.

  3. Sometimes it's hard to have pets because we know they aren't going to be around as long as they should be yet I can't imagine not having them in my life. Losing my dog is something I fear to the point that I'm in extreme denial about it and never talk about it! I'm glad you're appreciating the time you have with Rocky.

  4. Oh no I'm sorry to hear about Rocky. I'm actually going through pretty much the same thing right now with my dog George. He's been having a lot of old-age-related problems lately and I just can't even deal with the thought that he probably doesn't have much time left. The sad thing is he's back home with my parents about an hour away while I'm here at school. It's pretty awful. So I empathize. Soak up that time you have together!

  6. That snack looks delicious!

I love Death Cab For Cutie! Such a vastly underrated band. "Meet Me on the Equinox" will always be a favorite song of mine.

So sorry to hear about Rocky. Losing a pet is so hard.

I've been writing currently posts (influenced by you) for a while. If you'd like to read please stop by! www.allmygoodintentions.com

  7. yessss a V-Day recipe! You know I love love, so I'm pumped about that.

Also, I tried to get into Mad Men, but I just couldn't! I really wanted to like it, but I gave it 2 episodes and was not amused, so I quit. Does it get better after that?

    1. I have the same question as Jaclyn. I'm a TV junkie and everyone says Mad Men is so good, but I bought the first season and only watched the first two episodes. I just couldn't get into it. Does it get better or are those two episodes indicative of the whole season? If so it just not be the show for me which is okay.

    2. I'll tell you what I told Jack--it is very slow at first. It took me a while to even like any of the characters, and it wasn't until Season 3 or so that I decided I actually liked the show. Season 5 is my favorite, and now I'm completely obsessed! It's masterfully done and it's just...it's art! But yes, it does take more than a few episodes--at least give it a season or two!

  11. So many interesting topics here today...Even though I could share thoughts on all of them, I think today I will direct my comments to the paragraph on Rocky.

My first dog, Lily, made it to one month shy of her 14th birthday. She had two difficult years at the end, but the last one was awful. If I could turn back time, I would have let her go sooner. I will never keep another pet here with me just because medical care, medication, and fortunate finances allow me to keep her going. What I have learned is that quality of life is more than just being able to eat, drink and go to the bathroom by yourself. Lily had the canine version of Alzheimer's, Canine Cognitive Disorder. I'll spare the details of her medication and round the clock care, because the bigger point here is something two particular friends said to me after she was gone.

    1. We know our pets won't live as long as us, that's just the way it is. We just need to love them and care for them, have fun with them and enjoy them for as long as they are here.

    2. Open your heart to a new one soon. You will love it's furry face just as much, just in a different way. You'll be glad you did.

And 3, my own thoughts: Pets don't have any sense of their own mortality. The most loving thing you can do is let them go when the time comes. And hold them through the end.

    1. Thank you so much, Gayla. It's really hard, but you make such wonderful points. Melissa and I were talking about Lily the other day, actually! Right now we're just trying to do the best we can for Rocky. He doesn't seem to be acting too different and he really doesn't seem to be in any pain at this point, so for now it's just a lot of love and extra ear scratches.

  13. I'm excited for the weekend too. Hopefully the Nor-easter doesn't hit Philly too hard and we get just the right amount of snow.

  14. I love this sort of post! My blog is still a baby (not even a week old!) but I'm hoping to start a Currently sort of series. Closest I've got so far is my "Happiness is..." post, which I may make weekly, who knows! http://the-cup-and-saucer.blogspot.co.uk/2013/02/happiness-is.html?

I really love your blog, it's very inspiring! x
