On My Last Day at Work

Friday, July 26, 2013

It's my last day of work. I'm going in, going to finish up a few things, pack up my dry-erase calendar that I've updated every month for the past year, have lunch with the girls in my department, and say goodbye to everyone.

There were sometimes a few days (okay, maybe weeks) over the last two months where I felt like leaving my job was going to be easy. But now, on my last day, I'm realizing that it'll be harder than I thought. I've made some great friends, and I've enjoyed spending my days with them. I've learned a lot. And I will miss it.

I'm not good at goodbyes. They make me sadder than I need to be. I prefer to just announce the next time we'll see each other. I'll be back in Roanoke again in September, and even if I don't get around to visiting or seeing everyone, it will feel okay because I will be back. No going-away parties, please. It's the finality of a real goodbye that makes me anxious.

But a great thing about friendships is that you can take them with you.

I'm spending the weekend with Melissa, who will be here this afternoon to visit for a few days. We have wedding things to discuss and cocktails to try, and just general chilling out and relaxing to do. I've been looking forward to this for a while.

Wishing you a really great weekend.

  1. "but a great thing about friendships is that you can take them with you" -- Love that and needed to hear that as I prepare to leave my job for a big move as well. Thanks Megan!

  2. Saying goodbye can be so hard! So say "goodbye for now" or "see you soon." I hope that you can still have a wonderful day making new memories as you get ready for your move. Have a happy Friday!

  4. Have a great last day. It can be so bittersweet, even if you're truly looking forward to the adventure ahead.

  5. I try to replace saying permanent "good bye"s with "see ya later!" because I've discovered that you WILL see people you care about again eventually, even after moving across the country! However, it's always hard to leave a phase of life and transition into a new mini-era!! Keep on looking forward :)
