How To: Coconut Oil Hair Mask

Tuesday, August 20, 2013

I often get questions about my hair care routine, and I often feel weird about telling my "secrets," because really the truth is that I wash my hair as rarely as possible. My hair is very thick, and with a little baby powder or dry shampoo, I'm good with a once-weekly wash and conditioner. Once a month, though, I use a coconut oil hair mask first. It's super easy, perfect for a weekend afternoon at home, and is basically magic for your hair. I'll show you how.

Start with crazy hair that you're ready to wash.

YOU WILL NEED
+ two heaping tablespoons of coconut oil
(that's enough for my long and thick hair--you might need less if you have shorter or thinner hair)
+ a microwaveable bowl
+ shampoo and conditioner

Put two tablespoons of coconut oil into a bowl. Microwave for about ten seconds, or until the oil has melted.

Work the melted coconut oil into your hair. I just dip the ends straight into the bowl and massage through.
I stop at the base of my head because I don't like to get my roots or bangs.

Wrap your hair up into a top knot and go about your business.
Let it sit for 30 minutes to a couple of hours, and then shampoo (twice) and condition as usual.

Note: make sure you rinse the shower or tub really well so no coconut oil residue remains.
No one needs to start their day slipping in the shower!

Do you use coconut oil as a hair mask? How about as lotion?
Tell me your favorite DIY beauty treatment!

  1. I heard of using coconut oil as hair product but never knew how to actually apply it. Thanks for sharing, Megan! I will definitely give it a try.

  2. UGH I wish I could do something like this but I hate smelling like food! (Remember how, back in middle school, everyone wore strawberry/vanilla/creme brulee lotion? I died.)

  3. Going to give this a try! I have some seriously thick hair, and I've often thought about washing it less, because I know I could get away with it. What kind of dry shampoo do you use?

    1. I use baby powder most of the time but when I need some volume, I use Suave's dry shampoo. That one is my favorite other than a Bath and Body Works one, but that one is a bit on the expensive side.

    2. I love Suave's dry shampoo! And it is super cheap!

  4. I keep hearing about this more and more and you make it look super easy. I also happen to have a jar of coconut oil in the back of the pantry somewhere... maybe I'll try it.

  5. I loooove using coconut oil for everything! I did a hair mask last week but didn't wash it out that well and looked terrible until I could run home from work and shower again! It made my hair awesome afterwards though. I use coconut oil as a body lotion and cuticle cream, as well as a makeup remover. I need to stop washing my hair every day... I've been scared to use dry shampoo.. I need to work on that!

    1. Yeah you really have to shampoo a couple times (or more!) but once it's all out, it's fabulous!

  6. I love using coconut oil on my hair too. It smells awesome! Right now, I'm giving extra virgin olive oil a try. It works great as well :)

  7. I was my hair every other day, but I feel like it gets so oily so quickly! It's super frustrating. I usually end up putting conditioner on the tip of my hair and sleeping it in there if I'm blowing/processing my hair a lot.

  10. I'm so going to try coconut oil on my hair! Is it easy to wash out or does it have a tendency to stick to hair?

    1. It's a little difficult to get out. I usually shampoo normally and then just shampoo the ends again.

  12. You shouldn't microwave the oil because it takes out the vitamins out of the oil plus you should apply the oil to wet so it absorbs It better :)

    1. Wrong. Microwaving does not "take the vitamins out" and applying oil to a water soaked head would truly defeat the purpose , water repels oil! Use it on a dry head for results.

  13. I love using coconut oil as a hair mask (I actually use the same Trader Joe's organic virgin coconut oil). I have straight, long, very fine hair that practically stands on end due to static on very cold days. These coconut oil masks work wonders for static and fly aways!

  14. Megan! I just googled coconut hair mask and you were the first hit! Look at you, internet blogger sensation! Love keeping up with you and Rob online. I have a layover in MN, and it may be delayed (big storm coming through), if so, I'll get in touch. Glad you're doing so well. xoxoxox KatieRobey

  15. I live in Canada and the winters are brutal on my long thick blonde locks. Right now it resembles straw more then hair!! I literally soak my hair with the melted coconut oil and wrap it up and cover it with a shower cap. I throw a towel over my pillow just in case and sleep with it in. The next morning I wash it out and I tell ya, it's a miracle for my dry hair. My hair is porous and sucks the stuff in like it's literally thirsty. No high end conditioner compares with this treatment. If you have a ton of hair like me soaking it is the way to go. A little bit just won't do because the hair sucks it up. Doing a major drenching may sound scary but it's really not. I have no problem washing it out and my hair is soft, moisturizer and manageable overnight!! Highly recommend!!
