The New Year by Death Cab for Cutie on Grooveshark

Last year, Rob and some of our friends went to a huge party at a hotel in DC where my feet hurt and there was nothing but pasta in a cream sauce on an "all you can eat" buffet. We snuck off to actually have dinner and returned to spend New Year's Eve with our friends. It was loud and crowded, but our friends were there and we had fun.

We laughed about how much has changed this year as we headed home before midnight on New Year's Eve. We had a 9:30 dinner reservation, and both of us got dressed up and had a nice drink and ate delicious salad and serving after serving of meat at Fogo de Chao. We shivered as we walked to our car in the negative ten degree night, and I shook my head at the lines of twenty-two year olds in tee shirts and tank tops lined up outside of bars. I wanted to put a coat on them, and it made me feel so much older than I am.

I miss my family and my friends and the fun New Year's parties that took place on the East Coast without us, but at that moment, I was just happy to have a big coat on and to be spending the evening with Rob.

It's been a rough couple of weeks for me, but I'm happy. I'm so glad to see 2014 on my calendar--to be able to say, "We're getting married this year!" and to make a new list of goals. I still want to drink more water, write more often, and take time to really enjoy every day of this life, but there's more. I want my life to be something big and so far kind of unexplainable.

I hope all your dreams come true this year.

  1. This year I sent the boy off on holiday with his friends and stayed home with my family. We had my Mom's home-made wine and my Dad's favourite cake while we watched my brother's favourite shows together after catching the fireworks around the world (on TV). It was perhaps one of the best New Year's Eve(s) of my life. I didn't feel old opting out of drinking the night away. I felt grown up to be able to remember each second of it.
Hope you have a blessed year.

  2. Happy new year! I really hope next year is wonderful for you. I know it'll certainly be exciting with your wedding and all. I'm so sorry about the past couple weeks being rough though. I can really empathize with you, but you'll feel a little better eventually. Focusing on your goals will make the time go by faster anyway. Good luck achieving them in the new year!

  4. Meg,

I know 2014 is going to be a great year for you and Rob. The fact that you keep goals and keep your focus on them means that you will achieve them, because thoughts become things. The fact that you want your life to be "something big and so far kind of unexplainable" is again a thought that has become a thing. Look at your life right now. Your living in Minnesota working on your blog and other ideas you have and unexplainable great things just come to you like the National Bayer campaign. I know its hard to believe that these things will really happen sometimes because we tend to minimize them when they do happen. The hardest thing is that success is not linier as we would think it to be. Sometimes we think a bad thing is happening and you are going down or backwards. But once you pass through it and feel like shit, you come out the other side and you see you actually have moved up and are more successful. Then there is the time thing, but I wont go into that ( you know me and my thing about time and space). You are in for a very BIG life that will be kind of unexplainable. I know and guarantee it.

    Love being your Dad,

    Dad
