This Constant Transition

Thursday, October 31, 2013

There are days where I get a lot done. I feel good about my decision to be self-employed during this time in my life. I write. I read. I cook and take photos. I clean and do laundry. I work with Cave Girl clients. I write some more. There is time to go to the gym and there is time to think about dinner and there is time to talk to my friends, online and now on the phone, something I barely found time for before this. I hang out with new friends and I do yoga headstands in my living room. I love my blog and the apartment is organized and I'm just so happy.

And there are days where I don't get a lot done. I feel panic about life and my decision to be unemployed during this time. I randomly apply for jobs. I don't write. I wonder where more Cave Girl clients can be found. I think about essays I want to get on paper and then practically watch them float right out of my head and to wherever it is that good ideas go to die. I spend a lot of time watching a capella groups on YouTube. I leave laundry in the dryer for a week. I don't plan dinner. I decide not to go to the gym and then beat myself up over all the time I have and how little I am doing with it. I feel like Rob and I are alone in this city and I hate my blog and there's crap all over the floor and I just feel so anxious.

I think the biggest struggle so far has definitely been in learning to be kinder to myself. In learning to accept this season as the huge blessing that it is. In trying to be successful, whatever that might mean; and trying not to feel like a failure, whatever that might mean. To feel lucky and blessed, but to do it without guilt.

Rob has been so wonderfully supportive. When I panic and apply for fifteen random jobs I find on Craigslist (this happens more often than I'd like to admit), he tells me that if I want to get a job while we're here, I should get one, but to remember that it might get in the way of my goals to do other things this year. And it's true. With the uncertainty of how long we'll be here and where we'll go next (not to mention the two weeks I'm planning to spend in Virginia for Thanksgiving, closely followed by ten days for Christmas), it's hard to be taken seriously in an interview.

I managed to get in touch with a staffing agency who is starting to throw part-time gigs my way, which will give me a reason to dress up and get out of the house while simultaneously making a little money. Offices need receptionists and copywriters, and I have pretty free afternoons most of the time. My blog has been paying my student loans since August, which was a huge goal I made before I moved and actually sometimes can't believe I'm meeting, but it will feel good to contribute something more to our household income.

Moving to Minnesota felt like it would be the end of a huge transition, but I'm starting to accept the fact that life is just a series of changes. One day I might wake up and feel like my feet are finally firmly planted where they're supposed to be, but I know it won't be tomorrow, and I think that's okay.

On My Last Day at Work

Friday, July 26, 2013

It's my last day of work. I'm going in, going to finish up a few things, pack up my dry-erase calendar that I've updated every month for the past year, have lunch with the girls in my department, and say goodbye to everyone.

There were sometimes a few days (okay, maybe weeks) over the last two months where I felt like leaving my job was going to be easy. But now, on my last day, I'm realizing that it'll be harder than I thought. I've made some great friends, and I've enjoyed spending my days with them. I've learned a lot. And I will miss it.

I'm not good at goodbyes. They make me sadder than I need to be. I prefer to just announce the next time we'll see each other. I'll be back in Roanoke again in September, and even if I don't get around to visiting or seeing everyone, it will feel okay because I will be back. No going-away parties, please. It's the finality of a real goodbye that makes me anxious.

But a great thing about friendships is that you can take them with you.

I'm spending the weekend with Melissa, who will be here this afternoon to visit for a few days. We have wedding things to discuss and cocktails to try, and just general chilling out and relaxing to do. I've been looking forward to this for a while.

Wishing you a really great weekend.

Life Lately According to Instagram (#5)

Friday, July 20, 2012

1. At work I use a MacBook Air. Did you know I've never had a Mac before?
It's not nearly as impossible as I thought and I'm already sort of loving it.
2. Tuesday outfit, brought to you by Ann Taylor LOFT.
3. Hit my first AM train on my way to the office already this week.
Luckily I have a compulsive need to always be 10-15 minutes early to everything.
4. I impulsively bought this little succulent at the grocery store. I am so glad. He now lives on my desk.

This week, I've been coming home pretty much immediately after work, catching up with Rob and my family, eating dinner, trying to find the motivation to do some pull-ups or at least go on a walk, and then watching an episode of Game of Thrones (I just started last week and am obsessed) before I throw myself into bed, wishing there could just be another half hour in a day. I haven't found the time to do little things like paint my nails or read blogs or fold clothes that have accumulated throughout the week (you know, life things), but I think I'll get the hang of it soon enough.

I haven't been doing much tweeting lately, but I'm sure I'll make up for it on the weekends! Rob and I are off to Charlottesville for one more stay in our apartment before we throw our bed into the back of a truck, finally hand over the keys to the place, and close the book on that little chapter of our lives. I'm going to try to sit down and actually write something about that soon.

What have you all been up to? What are your plans this weekend? Fill me in!

Life Lately According to Instagram is a semi-weekly feature in which I showcase a few of my favorite Instagram shots from the past week or two. You can follow along with me all week if you'd like--just search for username @megan_flynn. (I'm thinking about turning this into a link-up. What do you think? Let me know!)

I Was So Lost, But Now I Believe

Carry This Picture by Dashboard Confessional on Grooveshark

[A jade plant, for luck, at my friend Tina's house, taken March 2012.]

I quit my job today.

Not in a "see you never, I'm leaving" sort of way, but I gave my notice. On May fifteenth I'll be closing the book on my coffee shop career. It has served me well, to be a barista while I was a student, but I'll not be a student for much longer, and it's time for something else.

This summer is going to bring a lot of changes.

I'm moving back to the lake. Rob is going to China, then to live and work in northern Virginia for seven months. I am so proud of him for landing a great job that he's excited about. I am so excited to one day feel what it's like to be excited about a career. I feel lucky to be able to say that in all the uncertainty that clouds my future, he is one thing that I can always be sure of. So I'm going to live with my parents while he starts this new job.

Until then, I'm not sure what my plan is. I haven't found a job for myself in Roanoke, yet, but I feel good about it. I'm really learning to let go and trust in the universe/God's plan for me. There's really only so much you can do so far in advance. I know that there will be writing. There will be time with my family. There will be food. There will be love.

And then, a permanent home together; time for me to finally start a career of my own; somewhere to put down roots. These are the things that await us.

I can wait another year.
