How To: Paleo Tea Time

Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Maybe this seems silly, or maybe it seems like it's not actually a thing, but it's totally a thing, at least in my house. We have tea in the afternoons. I absolutely love having a fancy little tea party at home with my mom or one of my girlfriends.

Giving up milk was really hard for me at first, because I was both an avid latte and tea-with-sugar-and-cream drinker. Black tea and black coffee just didn't do it for me at first, but after a little bit of training and a whole lot of time and commitment and espresso shots, I was fine with it.

The trick to changing a habit is to make the new habit really special. I do that with my mom's beautiful bone china tea set and really good local honey. And then one day I discovered So Delicious' Coconut Milk Creamer, and it was like the part of me that used to love milk had died and finally made it to dairy-free heaven.

YOU WILL NEED
+ tea
(lately I've been loving this vanilla rooibos)
+ coconut milk
(get the kind that comes in a little carton like half & half)
+ local honey
(we get ours at the Roanoke Natural Foods Co-Op)
+ a Paleo treat or two (try these cookies)

It's pretty simple. But it can totally make your day better.
Who wants to come over for a cup?

  1. I would love to come over. The tea set is super adorable! I love tea and I don't think it gets the credit that it deserves.

  2. These photos are so beautiful! Since starting to eat Paleo, I've become a huge tea fan...I really like having a mug of peppermint tea while I'm watching TV at night, as it's a nice replacement for the normal hot cocoa that I usually drink in the winter! I've discovered that often it's more the ritual than the actual food that we really enjoy, and it's easy to find a Paleo replacement for most things! Hope you're having a great week! Xoxo

  3. ME! I had never appreciated the allure of tea before! Moved to Scotland, somehow ended up with an English BFF and he was horrified at my lack of reverence for this ritual. Now we have tea all the time, but I've been trying to Paleo thing out lately and definitely miss this! I tried almond milk, but it always seems too thin. I'll give the coconut creamer a shot!

    Cheers!

    1. Yes do try the coconut creamer--it makes such a difference! I feel the same way about almond milk in my tea. It just doesn't cut it.

  5. I've been trying to get into tea lately, but I think I'm doing it wrong if thats possible. I'm an avid coffee drinker and I've been using splenda for YEARS but I'm trying to ween myself off the artificial stuff. I never thought of using honey. I don't think I've ever actually HAD honey. Is that weird?? Ha!

This was a super cute post! I'm going to attempt having tea time. And coconut milk sounds delish!

  6. Oooh, I would love to have a tea ritual. I'm an avid black tea drinker and usually "treat" myself to a cup or two at my desk around 2 p.m. -- right around when I want to crash. Love the idea of using the good china! Why save all the good stuff for special occasions when every day can be a special day?

  8. How fun!!! I work full time and go to school full time, so downtime for tea is a rarity, but this TOTALLY makes me want to make time for it!

  9. What a coincidence! I just place my regular on-line order with Harney & Sons Fine Tea right before I read your post today. I concur that daily tea is a fabulous way to feel good about indulging. And I love the fancy china!

  10. I'm a major tea/coffee drinker, and finding something to balance out the acidity after going Paleo was definitely a journey. My husband found a great recipe for coconut coffee creamer that we tried out and loved, though: here's the write-up I did, if you're interested :)

And I love the idea of elevating your new habits, so that they're something to look forward to, rather than a denial. Great outlook.

  11. I'm curious- around what time of day do you have tea? Is it like an afternoon tea or high tea sort of situation?

  12. I neeeeeeed to find coconut coffee creamer. I've only used regular coconut milk/almond milk and I've definitely been wanting something creamier. And well, honey. Don't even get me started on my need/love for honey.
