Coffee Talk

Saturday, April 20, 2013

This is a sponsored post. Thank you so much for your patience and support as I continue to occasionally work with advertisers.

When Rob and I lived in Charlottesville, we could walk everywhere and it was magical. We could walk to lunch, walk to class, walk to work, walk to get drinks, and I could always walk somewhere to have coffee.

Now that I am back in Roanoke, and about a twenty-five minute drive from downtown, I find myself making coffee at home a lot more. It's an easy time-saver that makes me happy. But how to make it at home? We don't even have a traditional drip coffee maker anymore, and I don't really intend to ever get another one.

I'm partial to my French press for regular coffee, which I find to be much better than a regular drip coffee maker. Our stovetop percolator makes wonderful espresso when I'm in the mood for that, but both the French press and the percolator are really particular and it's easy to mess up measurements and it's hard to clean, especially if you're in a hurry.

I am convinced that no one actually drinks instant coffee unless they are made to, but this article that says that 80% of total coffee drunk in the UK is instant suggests otherwise. But it's made from dehydrating a concentrated liquid solution that was at one time real coffee, and that's gross.

Enter Tassimo Coffee SystemUsing ‘T discs” - little coffee pods that come in a huge variety of taste preferences - the machine makes preparing coffee literally as simple as pressing a button. Perfect for the modern coffee-hound. It’s quick, it’s easy, and it’s that sometimes-forgotten characteristic, good.

What's your go-to coffee order? How do you make it at home?

  1. Haha yeah, we always drink instant coffee! Everything else does always seem like a big faff, and takes a LOT longer-but in my university house we had a big filter coffee machine and a cafetiere so we were pretty well served. That said, I almost always drink tea... xx

  2. My absolute favorite is cold-press coffee. In my pre-paleo days, I would make it with a shot of chocolate, milk and a touch of half and half. Oh goodness, my brain is exploding just thinking about it! Even without the milk and chocolate syrup, it's still my favorite because it's so smooth. And you can make it in a french press!

  4. I have a Keurig which I'm addicted to or I use Starbucks Via instant coffee. It's the only instant coffee I actually use besides Nestle cappuccino for a treat once in a while.

  5. I also have Keurig but I love the Tassimo we have at work because it makes lattes too. I think maybe instant coffe is more of an overseas thing? When I went to Israel that's all they had/drank there too!

  6. my parents have always had an old-school percolator and I got a basic electric one for my new apartment - the K-cup and other single-serving gadgets are fun, but I like the ritual of measuring the ground coffee and the water and using the filter. but I think Elle is right - everyone I knew in England was totally fine with the idea of instant coffee, and it's what would be made if only a cup or two was requested rather than, as Alice says, going through a whole faff to do it properly :)
