What I Wore 32: Polka Dots and Paisley

Tuesday, March 11, 2014

I'm truly enjoying the warmer temperatures here in Virginia, but these photos have been waiting patiently to be shared since Valentine's day. They needed to be documented because it was the first time I had put on a dress in a really long time. And yes, I froze a little bit. Minnesota is cold. But we knew that already. So without further ado, I present to you a belated Valentine's Day outfit.

Dress: Modcloth | Necklace: LOFT
Coat (similar): Banana Republic
Silk Scarf (they're on sale now!): Vera Bradley
Leggings: Victoria's Secret | Boots: Sorel
Bag (similar): Coach

I'll actually be wearing this dress this week, without leggings. Here's to warmer days!

Recipe: Paleo Valentine's Day | Chocolate Hazelnut Cups

Tuesday, February 12, 2013

Once, when I had a lot less to do, I sat in the kitchen of my college apartment and literally painted melted chocolate onto the insides of a pack of muffin liners in an attempt to make homemade Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. It kind of worked, but come on. Most of them did fall apart when you unwrapped them. Also, that was an embarrassing use of my time. I can't believe I even told you about it.

I decided to make some more reasonable ones this year, so I used candy molds (duh) and made them Paleo with dark chocolate and homemade hazelnut butter. I don't know if you've ever made your own nut butter, but it was so easy that I feel like I practically made up for the four hours I spent with a paintbrush that one afternoon, five years ago.

These ones are not nearly as pretty as packaged chocolates, but they taste like Nutella and they're made with love.

And they'll be gone before you know it.

Ingredients:
Makes about 16-18 cups.
Two 10 ounce bags of chopped hazelnuts (or almonds, or any nut)
One 10 ounce bag of dark chocolate chips
Two tablespoons of coconut oil--one for the chocolate and one for the nuts

Peanut Butter Cup Candy Mold--I used this one.

1. Melt the chocolate over low heat, stirring in a tablespoon of coconut oil once the chips are melted.
2. While your chocolate is melting, add the hazelnuts to a food processor and blend. That's seriously it. It takes a few minutes, but you'll have hazelnut butter before you know it. Throw in a tablespoon of coconut oil for good measure.
3. Spoon some melted chocolate into the bottoms of your candy molds. Add a bit of hazelnut butter. Top it with another spoonful of chocolate.
4. Stick them in the freezer until they've hardened and pop them out.
5. Store them in the refrigerator. Share them with someone you really like.

It's almost Valentine's Day. What are you making?

Giveaway | Datevitation

I'm so excited to be working with Datevitation, an online store that allows you to create custom coupon books full of fun date ideas for people you love. There are a number of reasons I'm loving Datevitation: the gender-neutral/custom images that allow you to make a coupon book for a friend or for your partner if you're in a same-sex relationship; the $10 off you'll get when you use the code ITALIAN; the amazing range and variety of date ideas in their library; and the fact that they let me make a book of my own and that now I have a sweet little gift to give to Rob on Valentine's Day.

A springtime segway tour of Rob's new city, Thai food delivery and a movie at home (a Friday night favorite), a musical (we've seen Wicked about six times collectively--it's probably time to branch out), the promise to at least try to play some of his favorite video games one night, and plans to come up with a new tradition. What will you put in yours?

Looking Back on Valentine's Day

Tuesday, February 14, 2012

Three years ago, a very tall boy who went to school down the road from me had my roommates let him into our apartment while I was in class. When I got home, he had already gone, but I sat down at my desk to find a little card by my computer. It displayed an old man, sitting in a rocking chair on a porch somewhere, with a bottle of soda in his hand.

"Maybe it's the soda talkin'," the printed text inside the card read, "but I'm plumb goofy over you!" And then, the sweetest handwritten note from the giver, perhaps a bit immature for a nineteen and twenty year old, but perfect nonetheless.

Will you be my valentine?

I'm so glad I said yes.

Valentine's Day came, and I was his date for a semi-formal event with his fraternity. I put on a black dress I had borrowed from my best friend Emma, curled my hair, slipped into some high heels and then twirled in the living room of that same apartment while Michele looked on and announced to our other roommates, "Hey girls come out, Megan looks hot!"

Sometimes I forget about the beginning of my relationship with Rob. I forget that we began as complete strangers, became friends, and then dated casually and carefully before we realized that what we had together was different from before.

I didn't know that the boy who left that cute card for me would end up being the man I'm sharing my life with today. At the time, I didn't even know if he was going to be my next boyfriend or not. I didn't know that a few years down the road, we'd be eating dinner together every night in our home. I didn't know he was the person I would include in the dreams about my future. I had no idea Rob would end up being the guy that I would want to hold on to until the end. But he did.

And I'm so glad.

Happy Valentine's Day
