Taking a Moment in the Middle of the Week

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

I'm trying to do yoga. When I say that I'm trying to do yoga, it means I got a sudden urge to one day stretch and actually be able to touch my toes. I am not flexible. So I did a few sun salutations yesterday and felt pretty good about it.

This move from Virginia to Minnesota has been really smooth so far, so naturally I am waiting for the moment where my anxiety will kick in and I'll freak out about being so far from home. So far so good though, you guys.

But what do you do when you feel a little anxious or a little stressed to calm down a bit?
I made a list.

+ Call someone from home. Ask to talk to your dog as well.
+ Go for that run even though you're sore and really don't feel like it.
+ Make some tea. While the water boils, stretch.
+ Watch a couple episodes of Friends. Works every time.
+ Write something down. Step away from it and add or edit.
+ Look through old photos and laugh at your hair.
+ Lie down on the couch and read something.

What do you do when you need to chill out?

  1. Episodes of Friends and tea cure EVERYTHING. As does running, actually. When I need to calm down, I tend to just have a big rant about it all to my mum- there's something about mamas that make everything better! xx

  2. I always go driving...with my camera, of course. It clears my mind and helps me get over things. Also, drink coffee... I like tea, but I need coffee to live...

  4. When I am stressed out, I take a step back and remember all the positives things I have going for me - my job, my health, my family, etc. I also remind myself that we need stress in our lives to grow. Exercising, by nature, is stressing the body, and it's good for you as long as you allow you're body to rest and regenerate. That's the only way to get stronger, faster, and more efficient. So when I'm stressed out, I remind myself that it's just an excercise to being a better me.

  5. I actually nap. But, these sound slightly more productive.

  6. I like to write stuff down or maybe sit outside and meditate (not deeply or anything, just breathing and focusing on that) for a bit.

Um...I also like to check my Tumblr dashboard. ;)

  9. Ha! Yes, talk to the dog, too! I always have my mom talk to my cat to make her meow a few times for me. Ridiculous? Doesn't matter!

  10. Reading always helps me relax when it's not something I have to read for school. It's a mental escape that actually works because it makes me think about something else. I, too, should probably try yoga or something since I'm super inflexible. I can't touch my toes either!

  11. I keep a jigsaw puzzle scattered on our table in the dining room and when I'm stressed I will walk over to it and clear my mind and only focus on the shapes and borders of the pieces. In those moments, I am clear.
King of Queens cures everything for me, much like Friends does for you!

  12. That's a great list! I always light a candle, grab a cup of tea, put on a face mask and settle in to watch a movie when I need to relax. I like to do yoga, too. As you said, stretching helps.

  13. Love the "Friends" suggestion and, yes, it does do the trick. Always! Another great way to break out the funk is to also check out dollar movies in your area! Other unique ideas I shared over here: http://goo.gl/B3F0MH
