Doing Spring with Kleenex Style Studio

Wednesday, March 12, 2014

Thanks to Kleenex for sponsoring today's post.

I know it's still early, but it really feels like spring has sprung here in Virginia. It's been so nice going for runs and walks on the Roanoke Greenway, eating dinner outside and wearing skirts and dresses. I definitely miss Rob and our home in Minneapolis, but this week of warmer weather was much needed.

I'm working with Kleenex over the next couple of weeks to talk about Kleenex Style Studio--a fun, inspiring way to discover more of the Kleenex Brand designs and products you love. And maybe even a few that’ll take you by surprise.

Whether you’re decorating at home or adding a pop of color to your clutch, Kleenex style has you covered. I picked up this fun spring-y box to compliment some purple flowers my friend Tina brought over the weekend. Because you know, pollen.

What will you do with yours? Find your style today--which Kleenex design is your favorite? As always, thank you for your support as I work with sponsors.

P.S. This is my last post before a new design tomorrow! Check back on Friday and let me know what you think!

Making Travel Easy with Venus Snap

Saturday, March 8, 2014

For the past year and a half or so, I have tried to improve my packing skills. It hasn't been easy, and I'm not even sure if I can say it has been successful. It wasn't until Alt Summit in January (with its set schedule and photo ops that suggest you look good in several different outfits per day) that I finally figured it out. You have to pack specific outfits for specific occasions--did you know that?

Until recently, I've just thrown all my favorite things into a suitcase and hoped for the best, which usually resulted in me wearing three of fifteen pieces and wondering where in the world that white top that I didn't bring could be, while marveling at how I ever got all of that stuff to fit in my bag in the first place.

So, because one successful packing experience obviously makes me an expert, and because I'm currently on a trip, I thought I would share a short list of packing tips with you.

1. Seriously, make a list of each thing you're doing and what outfit (accessories, shoes, the whole thing) you'll wear for it.
2. Pack the things you wrote down, and then add two or three pieces (shirts, skirts, dresses) that aren't on the list as backups in case you change your mind once you get there.
3. Roll clothes instead of folding them. It's space-saving and they won't wrinkle.
4. Pack small, travel-friendly toiletries, like the Venus Snap (available at Target). It's a mini razor (with the Venus Embrace blade) that comes in an adorable little compact case and has a water activated ribbon of moisture, so you really don't even need to pack shaving cream! Having one less thing to bring is always nice.

How do you make packing (and travel!) easier?

Brand Highlight: Spiegel

Thursday, February 27, 2014

When it comes to shopping, I tend to be looking for just one or two new things for my closet at a time. I love browsing and I love clothes, but I'm not always one to just buy things randomly. I can go a long time without a shopping spree! But sometimes a website comes along that's really easy to use and the prices are great and I find myself suddenly "needing" a lot more! I go from only maybe needing a white cocktail dress for my bachelorette party to suddenly adding jumpsuits, jewelry, and shoes to my list!

I'm here today to talk to you a little bit about Spiegel. They're a brand that's been growing and evolving since 1912. You can learn more on their awesome About page. Spiegel is incredibly interested in trends and ever-changing style, as you can see from their Trends page. And they've also launched Ultimate Outlet, which you can use to find pieces at discounted prices (some start as low as $6.00)!

Spiegel has an abundance of beautiful pieces and their site is really easy to navigate--I'm totally loving some of their dresses! I've got my eye on this one, and this springy skirt is on my warm-weather wishlist. I really appreciate the way they've set up their site by trends, colors, and items--it really makes finding that piece you didn't know you needed so easy. What are some of your Spiegel favorites? Mine are pictured above (clockwise from top left): 1 / 2 / 3 / 4

Weathering the Winter with Reebok

Tuesday, February 18, 2014

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Reebok.

My biggest complaint about winter in Minnesota isn't necessarily the constant sub-zero temperatures, it's that the ice and snow on most sidewalks has completely hindered my running. I've found a few trails that seem pretty clear and not too slippery, but to be honest I'm just too scared to risk it. Running on a treadmill is not my favorite thing to do, so I've been spending my time jump roping or treadmill walking on an incline, which for some reason is less boring to me. But Reebok recently sent me a pair of Reebok ZQuicks, and they've got me excited about getting back out there.

The shoes are inspired by hi-performance, Z-rated tires--and the outsole delivers control, traction, and speed. They fit like a glove and are super light, with a no-sew upper and internal bootie that hugs your foot and makes you feel incredibly secure in the shoes. They're breathable and sleek while still being supportive. And they're bright and fun enough to remind me that winter won't last forever.

In Which My Fiancé Models | Hanes for Him

Thursday, February 13, 2014

You guys, it's Valentine's Day week and Rob has agreed to model for a sponsored post on my blog. Romance is everywhere! I am so going to marry that guy.

Rob's style is casual and laid-back, which I love. He has a lot of really soft tee-shirts and a collection of great-looking sweaters. He's almost always in nice jeans, unless he's in a pair of flannel-lined khakis, which he got for Christmas and loves. Because he's such a tall guy, we're always on the hunt for shirts that are long enough, so when Hanes offered to send us a pack of their ComfortBlend tees (available at WalMart), I jumped at the opportunity. And so here we are.

These tees are super soft and durable enough to wear on their own, but since it's winter in Minnesota, he's been mostly wearing them under his sweaters. They have a wide variety of colors, but the Navy Heather (shown above) is my favorite.

Red Carpet Ready with P&G

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

It's award season, you guys! In honor of the Grammy's last week, P&G Beauty was nice enough to send me a bunch of get-red-carpet-ready goodies. With our wedding coming up in just over three months, things like great moisturizers and deep conditioners are making their way into my regular beauty routine. I'm just as in to hair and makeup as the next girl, but there's something to be said about taking really good care of yourself all the time so that you're always looking and feeling your best--and that's what I love about most of the products they sent me.

Here are the ones I really love already:

Crest 3D Professional White Whitestrips
I can't say enough good things about Crest Whitestrips. I've been using them since at least 2007, and I love them. I use a pack at least once a year, and they keep my smile looking super bright and shiny despite the amount of coffee (and red wine!) I consume so regularly. I haven't given these particular ones a try yet, so I was really excited to see them amidst so many other great products.

Herbal Essences Naked Dry Shampoo
I picked one of these up the other day, actually, so I'm pumped to have doubled my stash! I feel like I've tried every dry shampoo out there, and this is definitely one of the best. It adds volume while it reduces oiliness and it smells so good--I think it's mint. I might be making that up but there's such a fresh scent to it and I really enjoy using it.

Secret Clinical Strength Light & Fresh Antiperspirant/Deodorant
Please tell me I'm not the only one who sweats like, a lot more than is probably socially acceptable. For whatever reason, regular antiperspirants don't always do it for me, so I've been a big fan of Secret Clinical Strength for a couple of years now. It smells wonderful and I find it really effective.

Pantene Damage Detox Weekly Rehab Creme
I just used this for the first time two days ago and my hair feels amazing! Minnesota is really doing a number on me--between the cold and all the static, I can't seem to get enough moisture into my locks. And you only need to use a little bit, which is always awesome.

CoverGirl Bombshell Volume by LashBlash Mascara
This mascara has two wands--one for volume and one for intensity. I like it a lot, but have to be honest and say that I'm a sucker for anything that includes the word "bombshell" in its name or description.

There was a lot of great stuff included that I haven't tried yet--I'm excited to give the Olay Regenerist Luminous Tone Perfecting Cream a try soon. What do you add to your beauty routine to get camera-ready for a big event?

Getting Back Into It With Lorna Jane

Saturday, January 4, 2014

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Lorna Jane.

Finding yourself back in a fitness routine again after the holidays can be rough--I know. But simple things like colorful, comfy clothes can make the transition a little easier. Lorna Jane sent me a great pair of leggings and a bright tank top to spice up my gym (or living room) time this year and I'm really loving them so far. I was excited to try cropped pants since most leggings I wear are full-length. The tops run a little big, so if you're going to order something, maybe go a size down.

Lorna Jane also has an awesome e-book packed with tips and recipes to help you kick sugar to the curb in 2014. Check it out here. And while you're at it, visit Move Nourish Believe, Lorna Jane's beautiful blog. This is an awesome company and I'm so glad to have the opportunity to work with them.

It's a new year! Let's make the most of it.

Holiday Hair Inspiration (Part Two)

Wednesday, January 1, 2014

Happy New Year! Last week I told you about my fun holiday partnership with Pantene, and today I'm here to give you an update! Last night I tried to follow this tutorial, I really did. I think my bangs and the fact that I don't have a rattail comb contributed to my failure, and I ended up just using the instructions and photos as inspiration and made it up as I went along. Steps one and two were fine, and then I just twisted along on my own, adding extra pieces as I went.

All of the products are awesome, but for this look I used the Pantene Root Lifter Spray Gel, Pantene Stylers Heat Protection Spray, and Pantene Stylers Extra Strong Shaping Hairspray. I'm not usually one for a root lifting spray of any kind, but this one is awesome and I think I'm going to start putting more time into styling my hair in different ways from now on. All it takes is a few extra minutes and a couple bobby pins!

Thanks for letting me share my experience with you--I hope you all had a great night last night! Rob has the day off and it's so nice spending the first day of our wedding year (!!!) at home together. How have you been celebrating this New Year?

Holiday Hair Inspiration + a Quick Giveaway

Thursday, December 26, 2013

Happy Day-After-Christmas, friends! We're still in Virginia until Saturday, but after that Rob and I have plans for a quiet and romantic New Year's Eve dinner at Fogo de Chao in Minneapolis. I'm really looking forward to getting dressed up and spending our last unmarried NYE together. In 2014, we'll be Mr. and Mrs. Peterson! I'm planning to put on a fancy dress, some heels, and do something really fun with my hair.

I'm not too much of an up-do lady, although I love an elegant up-do for really special events, I usually show up to a holiday party with my normal hair--curled, but maybe with a bit more volume than usual. I'm a fan of vintage styles, and really love the whole victory roll look (as you can see here). For our New Year's Eve dinner, I want to try something similar to that, but maybe a bit less costume-y. Lucky for me, Pantene sent a huge box of awesome products to help make my holiday hair styling a breeze.

Read further to check out the style I'm using for inspiration, the Pantene products, and to win a set of your own!

I came across this tutorial in Cosmopolitan the other day and just really loved it. I'm not sure how it's going to work with my bangs but I'm excited to give it a try!

This is what Pantene sent me:
Pantene Heat Shield Shampoo + Conditioner
Pantene Advanced + Keratin Repair KeraGloss Oil Mist
Pantene Smooth with Argan Oil Shine Serum
Pantene Daily Moisture Renewal Silky Moisture Whip
Pantene Stylers Extra Strong Shaping Hairspray
Pantene Root Lifter Spray Gel
Pantene Volume Triple Action Volume Mousse
Pantene Stylers Heat Protection Spray

Want to win a Pantene package for yourself? Simply comment on this post and tell me your New Year's Eve plans! Don't forget to enter in Rafflecopter below! I'll pick a winner tomorrow.

Holiday Gift Idea: Under Armour Cold Gear

Thursday, December 12, 2013

Under Armour recently sent me a few awesome hats and I wanted to share just how awesome and warm they are. I'm excited to be stuffing our stockings with plenty of UA cold weather accessories this year. Stay warm out there!

Holiday Gift Idea: Koss Fit Series

Tuesday, December 10, 2013

This post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Koss.

I'm not usually one for holiday gift guides, but I do have a handful of pretty awesome sponsors this month whose products would make wonderful presents for the people on your Christmas list.

First up is Koss, whose Fit Buds and Fit Clips are actually changing my life. I've been using the same old earbuds for years, and they're worn to bits and fall out of my head with every other step I take. Koss' female designers teamed up with Gold Medalist Dara Torres to create the world's first headphones designed specifically for women.

Also, they're just really fun.

Get 'em at Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Walgreens, Kmart, or Sears this season. Happy holidays!

Thank you again for your support as I take on a few more sponsors this month. I only work with brands that I love or use myself, so I hope you find these partnerships of mine beneficial to you in some way.

Once a Runner | The Mizuno Wave Rider 17

Wednesday, December 4, 2013

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Mizuno.

Mizunos were a thing when I was running cross country in high school. My teammates--some of whom are still my best friends now--and I coveted them, always excited about the newest version of Wave Riders as we prepared for races; matching green uniforms and pink bows tied around our ponytails. They were bright and shiny and made us feel like we could do anything, and that, paired with a fabulous coach and summer two-a-days made us a team of pretty respectable runners.

A stress fracture kept me from running in college, but I have continued along since then on my own. Running has gotten me through every season of my life so far. Several of my high school girlfriends and I still run today, which always makes me smile to think about us in three or four cities across the country every morning, lacing up our sneakers and singing Disney princess songs in our heads. You never know what's going to connect you to the people you love later in life.

I ran our annual Thanksgiving race--another running tradition that's dear to my heart--in these Mizuno Wave Rider 17s the other day, and they were fabulous. The 17 is the lightest Wave Rider ever, and it features a Seigaiha wave pattern outsole to provide optimal flexibility. They're light, bright, ultra-smooth, and fun--just the way I remember them.

Special Delivery | Sizzlefish

Wednesday, November 27, 2013

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Sizzlefish.

We all know that fish is really important to our health and fitness, and I'm constantly trying to get more fish into our diet, so it was such a pleasure to have the opportunity to try out some Sizzlefish products the other week.

Sizzlefish is a home-delivery supplier of pre-portioned, high quality (pure and untreated) seafood, and they've specially developed their products with athletes in training in mind. Everything is flash-frozen and shipped directly to you. They sent me their Omega-3 Protein Mix, which came with two servings each of of coho salmon, Atlantic salmon, sablefish, rainbow trout, catfish, Atlantic cod, and haddock. I'm pretty sure this was my first time having sablefish, and it was so delicious (the texture kind of reminded me of lobster).

I prepared each one almost exactly the same way--I just seasoned them with salt, pepper, onion powder, crushed red pepper, and garlic powder before pan-frying them with some grass-fed butter. I added some dill to the salmon and at it on a bed of spinach with some home-made balsamic vinaigrette and a slice of lemon. So good! I have a couple more servings of salmon still in my freezer and I'm probably going to eat those as soon as I get back to Minneapolis. It's so nice to have healthy, good food waiting for you in the freezer at all times, don't you think?

How often do you eat fish? What's your favorite?

A Look at Our 2013 Holiday Cards

Monday, November 25, 2013

I'm someone who sends holiday cards out on Christmas Eve, sprawling a large "Happy New Year!" across the top so they don't seem so tardy, so I was really excited when Minted offered to send me this year's holiday cards in October. They're a little more organized than I am, and this year, friends and family will receive their cards, if not before Christmas, then certainly before 2014.

The quality of Minted's products is really just amazing.
And I'm giddy to have another excuse to show people our engagement photos.

Are you sending out holiday cards this year?

The Grain Brain Challenge (Part Two)

Tuesday, November 19, 2013

The following post is sponsored by FitFluential LLC on behalf of Grain Brain.

In my initial post about the Grain Brain Challenge, I told you a little about the book and the premise behind Dr. Perlmutter's research and diet plan. Since then, I've been more intentional about working out every day--even on the weekends, and even if it's just a long walk when I don't feel like doing anything. I would definitely say that I ate well before Grain Brain, but I would still fall prey to the occasional Pad Thai or sugar spiral, which would lead to more cravings that you think only carbs can satisfy. Now I am sure to drink enough water, get enough fat every day, and take fish oil and my other vitamins every night. Fish oil is such a miracle. I feel sharper and less anxious for sure. And my skin is so good! That's pretty awesome.

My biggest concern with the book was that at first, I found myself getting a little obsessive--scared of juice, for example. In juicing, we get rid of the fiber that our body uses, so we're almost getting straight sugar. A twelve-ounce glass of orange juice has nine tablespoons of sugar in it--that's the same as a can of Coke! I get that, but it initially freaked me out in a way that didn't feel productive. But the point of Grain Brain is to empower us to make better choices today and tomorrow, not to leave us wringing our hands over yesterday's breakfast.

The Grain Brain message is extreme, but it's important--and maybe we need to be a little more extreme about the choices we make and the things we feed ourselves. We live in a world where people are ill all the time, and we have so much more control over our health and wellness than we realize. I might still enjoy Pad Thai from time to time--I'm sorry, it's my favorite--but I'm going to be more informed about the things I eat and strive to make even better choices.

There were so many amazing things laid out for me in this book that I really can't recommend it enough. I know how terrible gluten makes me feel, but there are people who could live their entire lives not realizing that their health issues might be directly related to the things they're putting into their body every day. Give it a read, and then give the Grain Brain Challenge a try! I bet you'll be glad you did.

--

I just want to take a moment to really thank you, my readers, for supporting me as I continue to work with sponsors. It really means the world to me and I appreciate you all so much for making this possible.

What I Wore 58: Cozy Weekend, Loopsway, and a Giveaway

Monday, November 18, 2013

Rob and I had a really nice rainy weekend together, complete with several errands and a Thai lunch date on Saturday. When we have places to be but it's cold and grey out, I love nothing more than a cozy tee and a soft hat with some stretchy black pants or leggings. I added a fun pair of earrings to fancy myself up a bit, and I was ready to go!

I've been saying this every week since the end of October, but I think we might finally be done sending out save-the-dates. I'm headed to Virginia for two weeks on Thursday, so there's plenty to be done around here before I'm actually ready for my trip. Overall, it was a productive weekend. Even if there's still laundry to fold.

Earrings: c/o Loopsway
Tee (similar): H&M
Pants: J.Crew
Hat: Nine West

I've really been enjoying these earrings from my newest sponsor, Loopsway. It's sort of the perfect little shop--it's an online boutique started by a new mom with a love of fashion. Everything is unique and beautiful and less than $20! Definitely worth a look, especially with the holidays coming up. And this week, one reader will win the piece of their choice. Enter below!

Making Body Scrub with Bing Smart Search

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

This post is sponsored by Bing.

Last year around the holidays, my friend Tony and I made a pact to turn 2013 into "The Year of DIY." He threw a bean-themed party with goody bags and a table full of awesome bean dishes and even made the cutest bunting for the dining room wall. I showed up with a round vanilla candle that I surrounded with cinnamon sticks and tied with a white ribbon, and then we didn't make any more crafts for the rest of the year.

This holiday season, I'm determined to make at least one or two gifts for people. I've always have a plethora of jars that has continued to grow over the years (I'm not sure if I'm actually a horder or just very environmentally concious), and I've always been a fan of a good body scrub--so I thought that I'd honor my oath to DIY and give a homemade body scrub recipe or two a try. (And, apparently, do a bit of rhyming.)

Image via Whole Living

I was really excited when Bing asked me to use their new Smart Search to navigate my next online searching experience, and this seemed like the perfect opportunity. Have you used it? I was so pleased with how it was not only easy, but helpful.

We passed by the Windows store in the mall the other day and stopped in to do a quick Bing search on one of their new tablets. I simply typed in "DIY body scrub" and was met with a really aesthetically pleasing page of results. A row of photos in the middle of the page were helpful and expanded with a quick hover of my mouse. Bing Smart Search truly does provide a smart summary of results. You get a rich, visual summary of the most relevant information from across the web, and I'm totally going to make that Spicy Sugar Scrub (pictured above) from Whole Living. It looks like it'll be perfect for the holidays.

Have you made any great body scrubs or other homemade bath/beauty products lately?
And what are you waiting for? Give Bing Smart Search a go!

As always, I deeply appreciate your support as I continue to work with sponsors.
