I'm so grateful for this past year we were given to be so intentional about loving him while he was still with us. But it doesn't make it any easier knowing that he's gone. He lived a great fifteen years full of boat rides and cuddles and was blessed with so few health problems until recently. I loved him so much--still do. My life was made so much better because of that sweet dog.

All Dogs Go to Heaven

Weekend in Photos // On the Boat
Monday, June 10, 2013
I traveled to Charlottesville and back on Sunday to have brunch with two of my best friends, but I left my camera at home. I did manage to snap a shot or two with my phone while I was there, though. I love seeing Emma and Shawna.
Saturday was the first boat ride of the season. It was warm and sunny and old Rocky, though a bit more hesitant and awkward than he usually is getting on and off the dock, found himself right at home in his favorite spot yet again.
Hope you had a relaxing weekend, too.
Weekend Walk | High Bridge Trail
Monday, April 8, 2013
Rocky got a little more than he bargained for and had to be carried at the very end, but he's still a sucker for a good walk.
After our walk and picnic, we stopped by The Bakery for some tea before heading back home.
My roommates and I used to walk there from my college apartment all the time, so it's always nice to visit.
I've been to Farmville twice in two weekends! What a treat.
It's hard to believe I'll be there once more next month for Sean's graduation.
When we got home we ordered Chinese food and my mom made us a martini.
A Saturday well-spent.
What did you do this weekend?
When _____ , I Feel Nostalgic
Tuesday, March 19, 2013
Today's cause of nostalgia is spring-like weather. If you've been reading for a while, you know it really is an almost-daily trigger that leaves me visited by an enormous nostalgia (one of my favorite phrases and pretty much the mantra of my life so far--see?).
When it rains and is warm and stays light out until well after 6:00 PM, I feel hopeful. I always say that I feel like myself at the beginning of autumn, but I guess that's not entirely true. It's the combination of the two. Fall promises that brighter times are coming, and then spring delivers.
It's the beginning of both of these seasons--fall and spring--where I truly feel like the person that I want to be. The productive person who reads and goes running every day, who doesn't feel anxiety, who laughs constantly and spends time with friends and tries to love everyone and eats brunch and drinks Bloody Marys outside on patios on a regular basis.
So when it rains and is warm and stays light out until well after 6:00 PM, I start to think about last year in Charlottesville, with walks around UVA and pistachio milk lattes on the patio of my favorite coffee shop and Sunday mornings at home with Rob.
I think about Farmville, and our undergrad adventures with roommates and friends who made everything fun. I think about Clarissa and Dirty Shirleys with Caroline at one of two of the only bars in town, and the 45-minute drive that Raquel and I used to make just to get dinner from Chipotle.
And next spring, I'll look back at this spring and think about taking my dog downtown for the St. Patrick's Day parade and stopping to let every kid we passed pet him, walking around until he was so tired and happy he could barely keep his eyes open on the drive home. I'll look back at the spring on the lake where so much of my life felt like it was in transition, and I'll feel the same way I do each year, but different.
Recipe: Paleo Macaroons
Wednesday, February 27, 2013
I think that, after sharing some quirks with you yesterday, I should also let you know that my dog sees an acupuncturist.
She takes a very holistic approach to Rocky's health that I appreciate, and the other day she said that he would benefit from some coconut in his diet; so Rocky should have one or two macaroons a day, which I also appreciate and simultaneously find hilarious (there's just something about handing a dog a human dessert that cracks me up).
Anyway, my mom and I picked up a couple tins of macaroons at the co-op over the weekend and while she and I and Rocky thoroughly enjoyed them, we (well, two of us, at least) were a little put off by how much added sugar they contained. So we made a Paleo version. Because a Paleo family is a happy family, dog and all.

We used this recipe from Elana's Pantry:
And they are Rocky-approved.
VLOG | In Which My Dog Plays a Piano
Wednesday, June 27, 2012
This happened the other day. Please excuse my loud cackles in the background. I obviously couldn't help it.
I'm on my way to DC to have dinner and a sleepover with my wonderful friends Tina, Melissa, and Whitney, and then tomorrow morning Rob is flying in! I'm picking him up at the airport and then we'll be in Charlottesville for a day or two before we head back to the lake. I have a few posts scheduled for you while I'm gone. Talk to you later!
A Room of One's Own
Thursday, May 3, 2012
I took the day off from work on Tuesday, knowing that I would be exhausted from a late night of driving after the Death Cab for Cutie show (which, by the way, blew my mind just as hard as I expected it to). Instead of wasting a day sleeping in and then sitting on the computer like I had originally planned, I decided to put some stuff in my car and drive to my parents' house for a day of unpacking and organizing my old room.
I'm sometimes impressed with my high-school self. For example, the above wind chime was picked out by a younger me, and it's just perfect. It hangs outside my bedroom's porch door and I love it so much. It's just right for its space.
I cannot say the same thing for my bookshelf.
Here it is, in all its disheveled glory. It's stuffed with books I don't read anymore and actual trash that hails from a world where I did not appreciate the perfection that is a built-in bookcase. So, I spent three hours emptying it and starting over.
It still needs some work, especially in the space that should be my desk, but at least what's there is alphabetized.

One of the oldest things in my house needs no improvement. Rocky hung out with me all day.
I think he's only getting more awesome in his old age.
There's a lot to be said for growing up.
At least, that's what my dog told me.
