Traveling Day | Back to Virginia

Wednesday, December 18, 2013

I can't believe it's been two weeks already, but this morning I'm headed back to Virginia for Christmas! It's definitely going to be a weird one without Rocky, but I'm really looking forward to spending some more time with my family and meeting up with my sweet friends. I don't plan to publish a blog post every day as usual, so feel free to follow along with me on Instagram, where I tend to over-share, especially when I'm visiting home.

Talk to you guys again soon! Safe travels to anyone else headed home for the holidays this week.

Vacation in Photos | Roanoke

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

I spent my first week back in Virginia at my parents house in Roanoke. It felt weird to come "home" and call it "vacation," but it somehow managed to feel like both. I spent time with friends, getting drinks, having dinner, and going on coffee dates. I went to the gym and then to the spa with my mom, had a wedding dress fitting, got dresses for my bridesmaids, cuddled with my dog, and read a book. It was great.

On Friday morning, Rob flew in from Minneapolis and I picked him up at the airport. We got coffee and did some grocery shopping for my mom before heading home, then back downtown for lunch with his friend, Ed. A few hours later, Rob's brothers and their friends were arriving, and we went back to my parents' house for beers and hard cider on the back deck. The next day his parents arrived with his oldest brother, his wife, and my sweet nephew-to-be. My best friends Tina and Emma came over, and everyone got acquainted and we had a little engagement party.

There's not much better than having so many people you love all together under one roof.

Hello from Roanoke

Monday, September 9, 2013

I landed in Virginia yesterday and it is so good to be home.

I'll be spending the week with my family before Rob lands on Friday and his family gets in on Saturday for a little engagement dinner and celebration before we head to Williamsburg for another week. Until then, I have friends to catch up with, morning workouts and a Tuesday spa date with my mom, a wedding dress to try on, and a really sweet old dog to snuggle and go on walks with every day.

I have some posts scheduled to go live while I'm away, but feel free to follow along with me in real-time on Instagram.
Wishing you a warm and happy Monday wherever you may be!

In Three Apartments

Friday, September 6, 2013

Sometimes I forget that we've shared three apartments.

The first one was in Roanoke, where I found anxiety and started graduate school. I felt like such an adult, grinding my coffee beans fresh every morning and parking in my garage. Rob lived there over the summer, and then Christmas break, and then moved in for another summer after his graduation from Hampden-Sydney, but it felt less like our apartment than it felt like it was mine, even if it didn't fit.

The second one was in Charlottesville, with weird green carpet and a tiny kitchen, but a little office/guest room that made us feel like we had a home. We spent hours in libraries and computer labs, at bars with cheap drinks and cornhole set up under a string of outdoor lights, and were constantly with friends. I felt like less of an adult, with a part-time job as a barista and afternoons full of research, and I loved it.

Now we're in Minneapolis, in the high-rise apartment with a balcony and a pool we never use. It's big enough and everything is new and we finally have that bookcase from IKEA that I've always wanted. This is the apartment we have as an engaged couple, and it's the first place we'll live as newlyweds. What other defining moments (other than that impending Minnesota winter) will occur while we live under this roof, I don't know yet. But I'll look back one day and see it from the future, and I'll tell you what this place was like and what it means to us because of that.

After a year apart, I forgot that living together is something Rob and I have done before--the norm, really. We've left little parts of ourselves places and picked up and taken things with us, and now we're here, together (again).

Weekend in Photos // Lazy Lake Days

Monday, June 11, 2012

After straining something in my arm on Wednesday, I took a little break from CrossFit and then ended up coming down with a little cold on Saturday, so I took the weekend even easier than usual. We spent a lot of time on the back deck in the morning with coffee, read books and fell asleep by the pool in the backyard, actually sat down to drink tea, and really only ventured downtown for 9:00 mass and breakfast afterward on Sunday.

I'm still not feeling that great, but my brother, mom, and I are headed to Charlottesville this morning so we can pack up a few things that are still in the apartment there. We'll make all the food and coffee stops that are necessary when one visits, and then we'll be back to Roanoke on Tuesday afternoon! Hopefully Dad and Rocky won't miss us too much.

It is so nice being home with my family. Now I just need Rob to come back!

How was your weekend? Who watched True Blood last night?
Happy Monday, friends.

Life Lately According to Instagram

Thursday, May 31, 2012

The internet at the lake isn't exactly the most advanced. I've been feeling a bit disconnected, which used to stress me out, but I have to tell you, when you're where I am right now, it's really not too bad. Some days I only turn my computer on to chat with Rob or work on my paper, and that's fine with me.

Here's some of what I've been up to lately:

1. Iced coffee and reading at Mill Mountain.
2. Trying to make water more fun by adding fruit and herbs to it.
3. Self-portraits? Sure!
4. More reading. This book ended up being unhelpful but is so lovely.
5. Hanging out by the pool.
6. Afternoon espresso. Love those baby cups.

I've also been working my ass off at CrossFit this week, but you don't get a picture of that because it happens early in the morning and then I get really sweaty.

Those Empty Corners of Life

Friday, April 27, 2012

[The street in front of our old Sunday Morning Spot, taken in Roanoke, May 2011.]

Currently, there are several empty corners in my apartment.

The space where a coffee table used to be. The old home of a lamp. An empty bookshelf in the corner of the office.

There was a time in my life when these empty spaces would have been a cause of anxiety and sadness. Now I look at them with joy and see how full of hope they really are. As I pack things slowly into boxes and send furniture away, I am simplifying my life.

There's something very attractive to me about doing things that aren't easy. Maybe it's the runner in me.

Go the distance. Throw things away. Make life better.

I remember a very specific moment from when Rob and I were leaving Roanoke to move here for the year. I was emptying the refrigerator in an apartment that no longer held any of our things. A broom sat, propped against another empty corner and dust covered the floor of what used to be our living room. The muggy August heat of southwest Virginia crept through the old warehouse windows of the apartment, and in that empty space, Rob pushed the hair from my sticky neck and said "I love you." That apartment wasn't empty as long as we were in it.

I have learned that an empty corner is just the beginning of something new and better.

Weekend in Photos // Smith Mountain Lake, Again

Monday, March 26, 2012

Here are some glimpses into my life the past three days.

I had an omelet from Mill Mountain.

Post-breakfast visit to the farmer's market.

I borrowed a necklace from my mother's closet.

Rocky relaxed on the upstairs deck.

Leaves sprouted from trees and hung over the lake.

We said goodbye and good luck to Andrew (middle) before he leaves to hike the Appalachian Trail.

Sunday Brunch at The Hotel Roanoke.

 It rained.

I spent some time untangling the wind chime outside my bedroom door.

How was your weekend?

Did you see The Hunger Games like I did?
Umm...did you weep like some sort of insane person like I did?

Hope you have a happy Monday!

Weekend in Photos // Dickens of a Christmas

Sunday, December 18, 2011

My "weekends" in Roanoke are always a blur, because they aren't really weekends; they're just Friday nights.

Rob and I drove through the rain on Friday afternoon and got to my parents' house around 3:00. It was freezing and rainy the whole time. My mom had tea at the ready. I forgot that I hadn't seen their house all decorated yet and it was such a pleasant surprise. Let me tell you, my parents' house at Christmas is a special kind of wonderful.

We went downtown for dinner and to walk around Dickens of a Christmas, which is sort of a tradition.

Friends, family, food, dogs dressed up in funny clothing, and lots holiday fun.
What else do you need around Christmas?
